It seems that MF makes two very similar lines ... the 1200 and the 1400 series. What is the difference?

I would be considering something like the 1225 or the 1423. Both offer 4WD, Hydro drive. But I have not picked up any brocures yet. Does one offer more in the way of attachments then the other. Does one have live PTO's and the other does not?

Can't seem to figure out why they would have two lines competing against each other.

Massey is a world wide company and therefore has fingers in a lot of operations. The 1400 series is newer, I believe. The old series and the new series may come from different plants or suppliers. Deere has done the some thing in keeping the 790 and 990 as value tractors and NH has done the same in bring back the TC-30. I guess MF decided not to phase out the older line.

When I talked to a dealer about the same question. He indicated that the 1200 series was discontinued. If you look on the web site, there is very little information on the 1200 series. It takes them a few years to phase them out so dealers can clear their inventory. The more who know the 1200 series is discontinued, the more who will want one for a bargain price from the dealer. Neither Agco or the dealer want that so while there are some in inventory, they do it quietly.

The 1423 and 1225 gear models are basiscally the same. On the hydro version the 1423 comes with crusie control. As mentioned by others the 1400 series replaced the 1200 series. Most significant changes were in the models higher than the 1225. Hope that helps.

Thanks folks for the info. I have a MF dealer right down the street from me and they seem to be very nice people (a neighbor of mine bought a machine from them).

What are your thoughts on the MF machines compaired to the JD or Kubota. I have also seriously considered the KIOTI machine. KIOTI prices are the lowest of the bunch and you get the bigest bang for the buck, but a dealer for them is quite a distance from me.

The new GC2300 looks nice ... but is it a capable machine for other than grass cutting? ....

The Masseys's are solid machines. They are built by Iseki in Japan and have been for 11 years. They are as good as any out there. The GC2300 has a lot of power and the loader is useful as well. There are also new frontattachments available (snow blower, broom & blade). Depends on what you are looking for. ....

I just purchased my MF1240 in August of 02, and my dealer had an entire line of the 1400 series. The specs are all almost identical, except for tires etc...I did not get that much of a better deal buying a phasing out model and it did take my dealer a week or so to locate a 12oo series with what I wanted on it. If I had to do it over I would get the 1400 series simply becase it is a newer model. But my 1240 is one tough machine. I am very happy with my Massey, and I wouldnt trade it for orange, blue, or green!!! Best of decision making. ....

As far as the Kioti vs Massey I think it depends on the size of tractor you are looking for. I think the DK series compares well with the Massey 12XX or 14XX. I am not sure the 2554 which is the same size as the 1225 would compare as well. The newer CK would match or surpass the 14XX but it is not available in that size.
If the guy down the street has good service then I might go with him. My experience with Massey was that the price was very comparable to the Kioti here. You need to post the prices you got and see what others paid. See if you can get a better price at another dealer and then give the local dealer a chance to match or nearly match it.

Talked to my Massey dealer last week. He gave me some pricing on compacts. They just got new prices in the last month and to my surprise they have went done quite a bit. I priced out a 1440-4 with Massey loader and backhoe and they were about $2000 cheaper now than they were in November. Like I said he said that he had just got the new prices. Have your dealer price you one out for order and see if it isn't cheaper. It may not be if he is just trying to get rid of what he has on the lot. ....
